The Berks County Detention Center is Shut Down!

Today we celebrate no more immigrant prison in Berks County! The Berks County Detention Center in Leesport, PA is officially closed and ICE has completely vacated the facility. This is a victory for the immigrant community, for Pennsylvania, and for our nation. We’ve shown the power of an organized community who fights for justice and freedom.

Thank you for being a part of this victory! Thank you for being a part of this movement!

With this victory and the end of the campaign to close the Berks County Detention Center, the Shut Down Berks Coalition will be closing its social media accounts and ending this newsletter.

But there are more victories to be won in the fight for immigrant rights!

As we celebrate this victory, we know the fight for liberation and to end all forms of detention is not over. Every member of the Shut Down Berks Coalition will continue to actively organize in their communities. Berks County organizations, including Make the Road PA, Berks Stands Up, and Sunrise Berks, are in active conversations with local elected officials and community leaders about converting the facility to one that provides much needed health and human services to local residents. Groups across the state will be working to close the Moshannon immigrant prison, located near State College, and ending the ICE contracts in Clinton County and Pike County. Nationally, we will continue to demand that President Biden make good on his promise of a welcoming country.

You can stay involved in these fights by following members of the Shut Down Coalition and subscribing to their newsletters.

As we close this campaign and celebrate this historic win, we also want to thank all of you who showed up and took action. It is the collective action of all of us that make these victories possible. We hope you stay in the fight with us!
