An Examination of Pennsylvania’s Death Penalty-Cohost an Event

From Pennsylvanians for Alternatives to the Death Penalty (http://www.pa-abolitionists.org/):

It’s time for a closer look. The report of the bipartisan Task Force and Advisory Committee on Capital Punishment in Pennsylvania identified serious and systemic flaws in the system, including the risk of executing an innocent person. A long line of studies has pointed to racial and geographic disparities, inadequately-funded indigent defense, failure to meet most of the American Bar Association’s standards for best practice in capital cases, and more.

All of this is stirring the desire for deeper conversations and reflections.  We’re offering to help create the environment to do just that. We’re co-hosting events across the state with school, faith, and community groups. The 90-minute program features the documentary film In the Executioner’s Shadow, followed by a short presentation on Pennsylvanian’s death penalty system, and a Q & A session.

Co-host organization’s responsibilities:

  • secure a venue with equipment necessary for screening
  • assemble a group of a dozen or more people
  • spread the word with your group members and join with PADP in publicizing the event

PADP will provide a knowledgeable facilitator, prepare invitations for you to send to elected leaders; design flyers; help with publicity, and provide informational material. If a group is able to cover travel and lodging costs, we can bring in Vicki and Syl Schieber, the couple featured in the documentary film, whose daughter was murdered in Philadelphia.

IN THE EXECUTIONER’S SHADOW casts a penetrating look at the consequences of the death penalty through three powerful stories – the rare perspective of a former state executioner who comes within days of executing an innocent person; a Boston Marathon bombing victim who struggles to decide what justice really means; and the parents of a murder victim who choose to fight for the life of their daughter’s killer. As the battle to overturn capital punishment comes to a head in the U.S., this provocative film challenges viewers to question their deepest beliefs about justice.
