So many of us watched in awe of the perseverance and leadership of Parkland survivors…kids not yet eligible to even vote, born years after the Columbine massacre. They had enough, and they began to organize, creating March For Our Lives and numerous other organizations and initiatives. They registered voters and they tearfully shared their stories and vision for the future. Four years later, they’re still working tirelessly, but things have gotten worse. We haven’t mobilized enough to reverse the political tide. We have become complacent, desecrating the memory of thousands and thousands of lives senselessly lost.
The uncomfortable truth we really need to understand here in Pennsylvania is that we have numerous laws we need to pass, if we ever hope to feel safe. We average a mass shooting every ten days here in Pennsylvania, and in 56% of cases, the FBI has found that mass shooting perpetrators exhibited clear signs of their plans leading up to the event. And here in Pennsylvania, we don’t even require background checks for the private sale of military-style assault weapons like the one used at Parkland. We must close this loophole immediately.
Yesterday was the fourth anniversary of one of the most deadly school mass shootings in our country. Today is a new day…will you contact your legislator?
