From Children First (http://www.childrenfirstpa.org):
The Pennsylvania Auditor General’s office released a report last week decrying school district efforts to be fiscally responsible, claiming their reserves are excessive.
The Pennsylvania School Business Officers (PASBO) swiftly refuted his lambasting by explaining that reserves are essential for school districts to make sure schools have “resources needed for all student programs and services” over the long term.
In short, reserves which are called fund balances are critical to meeting the complex financial demands of school districts as school boards throughout the Commonwealth work to minimize costs for taxpayers.
Meanwhile, the Auditor General ignored the swelling reserves among many of Pennsylvania’s cyber charter schools. For instance, where traditional public-school reserves grew by 12% over the last two years, cyber charter reserves ballooned by 119%!
Take a few minutes today and call the Auditor General’s office at 717-787-2543 and demand that he audit cyber charter schools because they are sitting on at least $164 million in reserves. At the very least, he should hold them to the same standard as other public schools in Pennsylvania.

It’s simple, let’s all play by the same rules to protect the effective use of taxpayer’s hard-earned money.
