Congress is Taking Action to #ShutDownBerks

“Because this is a facility that might be in violation of children welfare law and that would give the Governor the ability to act, that’s something I’m interested in pursuing.” – Congressman Brendan Boyle

On Friday, May 11th leaders in the immigrant community met with Congressmen Brendan Boyle of Pennsylvania’s 2nd Congressional District and Congresswoman Linda Sanchez of the Hispanic Caucus and the first woman of color to be elected to a leadership position in Congress. Both were asked to take action on the Berks County Detention Center and to call on Governor Wolf to issue an Emergency Removal Order.

Congressman Boyle committed himself to talk directly to Governor Wolf about state action while Congresswoman Sanchez spoke of opening up an congressional investigation of the center.

And yesterday, May 15th, the Hispanic Caucus renewed their commitment to ending family detention with news of an upcoming visit to family detention centers this summer.

It is more critical than ever to fight back on the unending attacks on the immigrant community and put an end to the immoral and illegal practice of family detention.
