Call on Chubb Insurance Not to Underwrite Arctic Refuge Oil Projects

From PennEnvironment (http://www.pennenvironment.org):

The Arctic National Wildlife Refuge’s future is not ensured.

The Arctic Refuge isn’t a permanently protected place. This means that future oil and gas drilling could ruin this wild place, and tracts of land could be leased off to fossil fuel companies.

That’s where insurance companies can help. Fossil fuel companies can’t drill for oil and gas in the Arctic Refuge without insurance.1 To ensure the future safety of the Arctic Refuge, we’re calling on Chubb Insurance to commit to not insuring fossil fuel projects in the refuge.

Oil and gas drilling would be disastrous for the Arctic Refuge. It’s estimated that drilling in the region would damage a third of the rapidly shrinking denning grounds of endangered polar bears. It would also damage the breeding grounds of hundreds of species of migratory birds.2

Drilling operations are also bad for public health. Fossil fuel extractions pollute the air with toxic chemicals that can cause major health problems for wildlife and communities.3

Fortunately, there is a growing list of insurance companies that have committed not to underwriting fossil fuel extraction in the Arctic Refuge. We’re working to expand that list by calling on Chubb Insurance to protect the refuge from future development.

Take action to protect the Arctic Refuge from oil and gas drilling today.
