NOTE: The open enrollment period for the ACA closed on December 15, so no new enrollments or changes to existing are being accepted at this time. However, the law is still in effect—the ruling did not include an injunction to end it immediately, and the ruling is expected to be challenged. If you have life situations that require a change—marriage, birth of a child, for example—those changes may be made at any time.

Editor’s note: Deborah Weinstein, Executive Director of the Coalition on Human Needs, issued the following statement Saturday in response to the U.S. District Court ruling late Friday regarding the Affordable Care Act:

“The sweeping decision in a federal District Court against the Affordable Care Act will be appealed. It changes nothing while those appeals are pursued, and many legal experts believe that the decision will not stand. Today, December 15, is the last day to sign up for health insurance through the exchanges. If you’re not covered, you’ve got until midnight Pacific time and until 3:00 a.m. Eastern time (12/16).  Click here to get covered: https://www.healthcare.gov/

“Voters in the recent election made clear that they want to preserve adequate health insurance. One powerful campaign ad for a winning challenger showed a woman with a serious medical condition asking her incumbent Representative whether he would preserve the current protections for people with pre-existing conditions, the coverage that was keeping her alive. He emotionally promised yes, but soon after voted against the ACA. That guy lost.

“Americans still need that coverage. The 10 million people who are insured through expanded Medicaid programs need it.  We will work together with people nationwide to keep it, and to hold accountable the officials who try to dismantle it.”
