White House Budget is Devastating for the Environment—Urge Congress to Oppose It

President Trump’s proposed budget is even worse than I expected – and my expectations were pretty low.

Our national budget should reflect our shared values. But this budget will cut vital funding for our communities, our environment, and harm the most vulnerable among us.

Trump’s budget guts the EPA’s funding by nearly one-third, bringing it to its lowest funding level in decades. It would eliminate vital programs like the Clean Power Plan, climate change research, and Energy Star and cancel funding that helps states and cities fight air pollution and run environmental justice programs.

Even Republican Senator Lisa Murkowski (AK) said, “We need to remember that these programs are not the primary drivers of our debt”.

This destructive budget would not only wreak serious harm on our environment, it will cost lives. Air pollution already kills thousands of people every year through asthma attacks, heart disease, and cancer.  We can’t afford to go back to the “bad old days” of burning rivers and smog as thick as pea soup.

The environmental protections this budget would reverse or de-fund are the ones we’ve worked so hard to achieve over the past several years. You, and thousands of other people of faith called congressional offices, mailed postcards, sent emails and visited elected officials to get better environmental and climate protections.

We can’t let this budget pass. We can’t let all of that work be in vain.
