From Faith in Public Life (http://www.faithinpubliclife.org):
In this season of darkness, communities of faith are called to be beacons of light. Many of us are struggling with sickness, grief, sorrow and the burden of economic instability. But we nourish each other, and our movement for justice persists.
We are defending faith from dangerous politicization. Last month, when President Trump called for churches to reopen in time for Easter, over 9,000 leaders from Faith in Public Life’s network spoke out on principle to prevent what would have been an Easter massacre. We will continue to provide ministries and congregations with the resources they need to connect safely online and speak about the pandemic in healing ways. In these extraordinarily difficult times, we are finding ways to meet new challenges and love one another.
In this spirit, we’re delighted to share this universal prayer spoken by myself (Rev. Jennifer Butler), Fr. James Martin, SJ, Diana Butler Bass, Rev. Jacqui Lewis, Lisa Sharon Harper, Rabbi Pamela Gottfried, Rev. Joe Parramore and Soumaya Khalifa. We hope you’ll watch it, be comforted, and share it with your friends.
This season is a reminder that our work is about so much more than politics. We are driven by love and hope for a better future. We must guard against burning out in a frantic drive of activity. By spiritually centering ourselves amid the pandemic, we not only care for our own spirit, but also love our neighbors and honor the God who made us and loves us.
I am more grateful than ever to be part of this movement for justice and wholeness. Hearing what faith leaders like you are doing across the country has been hugely inspiring and encouraging. Thank you for your care and solidarity.
