From the National Farm Worker Ministry (https://nfwm.org/):
Justice for Migrant Women, a NFWM and Child Labor Coalition ally, has launched a congressional outreach message on the Children’s Act for Responsible Employment and Farm Safety, H.R. 7345, CARE Act, which would end the exemption for exploitative child labor in U.S. agriculture. The legislation would raise the age of people allowed to do farm work from 12 to 14+ and raise the age of people allowed to do hazardous farm labor from 16 to 18+.
In the United States, children as young as 12 are legally allowed to work in the fields with little to no protections. And every day around 33 children are seriously injured in an agriculture-related incident. This is why Congress must pass the CARE Act.
With just one minute of your time, you can send a message to your member of Congress at https://actionnetwork.org/letters/show-you-care-tell-congress-to-protect-children-in-agriculture, urging them to co-sponsor H.R. 7345.
While retaining exemptions for family farms and education programs, the CARE Act would bring age and work hour standards for children in agriculture up to the standards for child working in all other industries and provide greater protection against physical harms.
Show your support for this legislation and tell your representative to co-sponsor the CARE Act. Supporting the CARE Act is a major push for “Harvest of Justice 2022: Child Labor in Agriculture.”
