From Fair Districts PA (http://www.fairdistrictspa.com):
County Commissioners across Pennsylvania are voting this week on an important redistricting resolution. Your voice can make a difference.
The Cumberland County Commissioners have asked the County Commissioners Association of Pennsylvania (CCAP) to consider a resolution in support of an amendment to the PA Constitution creating an independent and nonpartisan citizens redistricting commission.
According to Jim Hertzler, Cumberland County Commissioner:
the gerrymandering of legislative and congressional districts to suit the political whims of those who govern…instead of the people they’re supposed to serve…has too often worked to impede action on critical issues of importance to the people.
The support of CCAP would send a strong message that local leaders across the Commonwealth oppose the manipulation of our districts for political advantage and believe that the redistricting process should put voters first.
Please take a few minutes to call or email your county commissioners to urge them to vote in favor of the CCAP resolution. Check your county website for contact information or “feedback form” (find your own county’s website at http://www.pacounties.org/PAsCounties/Pages/County-Websites.aspx). Here’s some suggested wording, but an even stronger request would include details from your own county’s experience.
I am calling / writing to ask Commissioner Y to vote in favor of a County Commissioners Association of Pennsylvania resolution to “support an amendment to the Pennsylvania constitution that would assign the decennial task of district reapportionment for both legislative and congressional seats to an independent and nonpartisan citizens redistricting commission.”
The gerrymandering of our congressional and General Assembly maps allows legislators to slice and dice our communities for political gain behind closed doors. Pennsylvania’s democracy and our people deserve better. CCAP’s support for unbiased and nonpartisan redistricting would send a strong message that local leaders across the commonwealth oppose the manipulation of our districts for political advantage. Pennsylvanians demand a redistricting process that puts voters first.
Thank you for your continued support of this important work!
