From the Clean Air Council (http://www.cleanair.org/):
According to the recent report from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, the world only has 11 years to cut greenhouse gas emissions by 45% to avoid catastrophic climate change. Bold actions must be taken immediately—act now at http://salsa4.salsalabs.com/o/51176/p/dia/action4/common/public/?action_KEY=25829. One critical action is the reduction of methane, a very potent greenhouse gas that must be reduced by at least 35% by 2050 (compared to 2010 levels).
Fortunately, Governor Tom Wolf recently signed an executive order setting goals of reducing Pennsylvania’s greenhouse gas emissions 80 percent by 2050 (compared to 2005 levels). While this is a commendable goal, the concrete steps taken to achieve this goal will make all the difference.
Pennsylvania is the nation’s second-largest natural gas producing state. Peer-reviewed studies have consistently shown that methane emissions from Pennsylvania’s gas industry are on the rise. Cutting methane pollution from the natural gas industry must be a central part of achieving Governor Wolf’s climate goals, particularly given the Trump administration’s reckless efforts to weaken basic methane protections at the federal level.
The Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) recently proposed a draft rule to limit air pollution from the tens of thousands of existing natural gas facilities in Pennsylvania, which will help reduce methane pollution along with other harmful industrial emissions.
