From Conservation Voters of PA (http://www.conservationpa.org):
Pipelines are a threat to our environment in so many ways, but there’s something we can do about it. Let Governor Wolf know we want our air, water and lands protected from the damage they cause.
Add your name to tell the Governor to hold off on permits authorizing pipelines that endanger our natural resources at http://action.lcv.org/site/R?i=BUFJev-Ep0Tv2IFOB0d8jw.
The PennEast Pipeline just picked up some serious momentum. The Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) issued an important water quality permit to the PennEast Pipeline Company. And that’s on top of the DEP’s recent permit approvals for the Mariner East 2 Pipeline.
More major pipelines aren’t just bad for our water and air quality, they could put families in danger. The legislature has cut the DEP’s budget to the bone, and the DEP doesn’t have the manpower to make sure existing pipelines work safely, let alone inspect new ones.
We’ve got to get a handle on all the pipelines we already have and keep communities safe before we let any new projects get built. Ask Wolf to put a hold on permits authorizing pipelines that destroy our natural resources until the legislature fully funds the DEP and hires enough safety inspectors.
These permits bring PennEast and Mariner East 2 one step closer to breaking ground on the pipelines. Construction will cut through rivers and streams that provide drinking water to millions of people, families could lose their homes and land through eminent domain, and we could even see explosions like the one that happened in Westmoreland County in 2016.
It’s outrageous to think that safety inspections are getting skipped, but that’s what’s happening across the state. Until the legislature gives DEP the funding to hire enough experts to fully monitor drillers and pipelines, our government has an obligation to keep Pennsylvania families safe and stop rubberstamping miles of new fossil fuel infrastructure.
If enough of us speak up for putting human safety ahead of corporate profits, we can give our Governor the backing he needs to stand up against big polluters and extremists in the legislature.
Thanks for all that you do.
