From Peace Action (http://www.peace-action.org/):
Last week, Senators Bernie Sanders (I-VT), Chris Murphy (D-CT), and Mike Lee (R-UT) forced another vote on their legislation, S.J.Res. 54, to end U.S. support for the Saudi-led war in Yemen, and thanks in no small part to grassroots pressure from committed activists like yourself, the Senate voted 63-37 to advance debate on their resolution! This is huge!
This vote was a critical step forward not only for ending the immense suffering happening in Yemen, but also in the struggle to get Congress to reassert its war powers. Thank you for playing your part in making this happen.
What comes next? We expect the Senate to take up the legislation again this week and hold another vote, but since the last vote was just about whether or not to allow a debate on the bill, we need to keep up the pressure on Congress to support the legislation itself. That’s why you need to call our senators today, even if you called last week, and urge them to support this critical legislation.
Here’s what you need to do:
- Check if your senators voted YES on S.J.Res. 54 last week. All of the Democrats did, as did 14 Republicans—including Pat Toomey.
- Please call the Capitol Switchboard today at 202-224-3121. Alternatively, you can call directly—find contact information: Senator Robert Casey – http://casey.senate.gov; Senator Pat Toomey – http://toomey.senate.gov.
- Follow the instructions to reach your Senators, and then say:
- My name is ______________, and I’m a constituent from YOUR CITY. (IF THE SENATOR VOTED YES: I want to thank the senator for supporting S.J.Res. 54 last week). I’m calling to urge the Senator to vote yes on S.J.Res. 54 to end U.S. military support for the unauthorized war in Yemen. Reports estimate that 85,000 small children may have already died of starvation caused by the war. We need to end this war and the U.S. role in it now. I urge the Senator to vote yes on S.J.Res. 54, and I would like to get a response back as to whether the Senator will vote for this legislation.
Our collective political pressure is working. We’ve already forced the administration to scale back support for the war by ending mid-air refuelings of coalition planes, and whatever happens in the coming days, the fact that Congress is debating and voting on this war is putting more and more pressure on the administration and on Saudi Arabia to end it. So now is no time to stay silent!
Thanks for calling your senators today!
