From the Alaska Wilderness League (http://www.alaskawild.org):
Recently, nearly-record low Arctic Ocean ice coverage forced about 6,000 walrus onto land, distancing them from their food source. It’s time for the Senate to act by taking a stand against Arctic Ocean oil spills.
That’s why we need your signature today at http://act.alaskawild.org/sign/congress-co-sponsor-stop-arctic-ocean-drilling-act_copy/. Next week, we’ll pound the halls of Congress to secure more co-sponsors on the Stop Arctic Ocean Drilling Act (S. 1794).
With Big Oil continuing to lobby for Arctic Ocean drilling – including a six-figure ad buy in the Washington, DC media market – we have got to make sure senators set a good standard for Arctic Ocean protections.
President Obama and his administration could make a decision that would impact future leasing in the Arctic Ocean any day now. He needs to see members of Congress coming out strong for Arctic Ocean protections.
Time and time again, we’ve seen companies botch efforts to drill in the remote Arctic Ocean waters, where cleanup from an oil spill is nearly impossible. Yet, these waters are rich with seals, whales, walrus and polar bears, all at extreme risk when spills occur. With the threats climate change poses to this region and our planet, drilling in the Arctic doesn’t make sense.
Urge our senators to take a stand and co-sponsor the No Arctic Ocean Drilling Act. We want to deliver your signature next week!
