From Interfaith Power and Light (http://interfaithpowerandlight.org):
Last year, the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) finalized common sense natural gas emissions standards aimed at putting an end to wasteful leaks, venting and flaring of natural gas and dangerous pollutants. The new standards would reduce the harmful impact of the oil and gas industry on our communities and cut methane, a potent greenhouse gas that traps 80 times as much heat over a 20-year period as carbon dioxide. Thousands of IPL members like you from around the country supported the stronger standards.
But now, the U.S. Congress is trying to block those standards before they even have a chance to take effect. Urge your senators to side with Americans, not polluters at http://salsa4.salsalabs.com/o/50836/p/dia/action3/common/public/?action_KEY=20833.
Gas wells and fracking sites are a major risk and contributor to climate change. We must move swiftly to truly clean energy like wind and solar and energy efficiency while establishing policies like this one that would minimize emissions from existing oil and gas infrastructure.
But instead, Congress now wants to go backward and let oil and gas companies off the hook with a Congressional Review Act (CRA) vote. We deserve better – Senators must not sell out the health of their constituents to the fossil fuel industry.
ACT NOW: Tell your senators to reject the BLM CRA
When CRAs are used this way, it’s nothing short of reckless; if it’s successful, the CRA would not only block the current standards, but would also prevent any similar standards to ever be issued, letting the oil and gas industry off the hook indefinitely. We cannot allow that to happen: our health depends on it. Plus, venting and flaring doesn’t just waste money, it lets millions of tons of toxic pollution into the air.
As people of faith we cannot remain silent while unnecessary pollution spills into our air harming our neighbors’ health. ACT NOW: Tell your senators to put their constituents first.
For our own health and to ensure a healthy future for our children, we must rein in oil and gas pollution.
