From Oxfam America (http://www.oxfamamerica.org):
Here is an update and request to contact your Member of Congress to address the humanitarian crisis at the U.S. southern border by co-sponsoring the Northern Triangle and Border Stabilization Act (H.R. 3524).
Over the summer we asked for your help in promoting this bill co-sponsored by Congresswoman Zoe Lofgren (D-CA) and other senior Democrats. This bill tackles immigration from Central America by committing the U.S. to address the violence, corruption, economic insecurity and other causes of forced migration from the region and protects the legal rights of asylum-seekers. This is not a crisis that will be quickly or easily solved, but this bill takes several important first steps.
Thanks to your calls and emails we have added many new co-sponsors on this bill since August- no small feat given the number of competing priorities in Congress. But we’re still far short of where we need to be in order to get this ambitious and comprehensive bill passed in the House.
Oxfam and our allies have been working hard to share the stories of people arriving at the U.S.-Mexico border seeking safety and to urge our policymakers to support them, as well as understand and address the complex reasons they left their homes in the first place. As part of this effort, this fall Oxfam hosted our first Sisters on the Planet trip to El Salvador and Honduras to better understand some of the reasons why people, especially women, are forced to flee their home countries. We heard profound stories of courage and heartbreak from many women.
Today, these same Sisters are in Washington, DC speaking directly to policymakers about their trip and urging them to support and pass legislation.
Please join us in amplifying their message by calling your Members of Congress and asking them to co-sponsor the Northern Triangle and Border Stabilization Act (or thank them for their support! A current list of co-sponsors is available here). A short summary of the bill can be found here and a simple, optional script is here.
