Twenty Years of Welfare Reform: Syllabus for Understanding Welfare Reform

From the Kairos Center (https://kairoscenter.org/):

Welfare reform signing

Monday, August 22nd marks 20 years since Bill Clinton signed the “Personal Responsibility and Work Opportunity Reconciliation Act.” This historic legislation dismantled the United States’ safety net for poor single mothers and children, replacing it with a system of state-run “temporary” cash assistance.

Now, a group of scholars from around the country have produced a syllabus for understanding the history of welfare and welfare reform in this country. You’ll find our own books, “A New and Unsettling Force” and “Pedagogy of the Poor,” as well as dozens of other resources in the 15-week syllabus. Find it at http://ajccenter.wfu.edu/welfare-reform-syllabus/.
