From Common Cause (http://www.commoncause.org):
The Pennsylvania Legislature just officially passed its shameful anti-voter omnibus bill on Friday– sending it to Governor Wolf’s desk for a signature right away.
They’re trying to follow in the footsteps of states like Georgia, Florida, and others who have responded to last year’s record voter turnout with hundreds of dangerous attacks on our right to vote — restrictions particularly targeted at shutting Black and Brown voters out of our democracy.
Fortunately, we anticipate that Gov. Wolf will veto these anti-voter bills — but he’s sure to come under harsh criticism from the far-right forces behind this nationwide campaign of voter suppression.
That’s why he needs to hear — loud and clear — that if he is willing to stick up for Pennsylvania voters and defend our rights, we’ll have his back. Please write to him today at https://actionnetwork.org/letters/take-action-thank-gov-wolf-for-defending-pennsylvanias-voting-rights
Unlike Georgia and Florida, we have a Governor who will stand up to these vote suppressors by rejecting these bills. But we still need to send a clear message that these partisan lawmakers’ attempts to rig our democracy and roll back our rights can’t be tolerated.
Here are just a few of the dangerous provisions headed to the Governor’s desk right now:
- Adding needlessly strict, excessively burdensome voter ID and signature match requirements — which would effectively disenfranchise tens of thousands of voters
- Dramatically limiting the use of drop boxes and Satellite Elections Offices — which offered crucial flexibility for voters who may not have otherwise been able to cast a ballot
- Restricting the time Pennsylvanians have to register to vote and request absentee ballots
- Creating bogus, partisan election oversight agencies that could harm our election systems and reduce trust in our democracy
We believe it’s worth taking a serious look at how our elections are run so we can improve them and also get counties the help that they need. But this bill wouldn’t do that — it would just complicate voting and put up barriers that will exclude voters from participating in democracy.
Thank you for writing your letter today — and for doing your part to fight back against these politically motivated attempts to take away our rights.
