From the Environmental Defense Fund (https://www.edf.org/):
Transportation is the biggest source of climate pollution in the U.S. And a landmark announcement moments ago by President Biden represents a defining moment in our efforts to drive down transportation pollution and accelerate our transition to zero-emitting vehicles.
President Biden, joined by leaders of the U.S. Big Three automakers and the president of the United Auto Workers, announced a goal for half of new passenger vehicles sold in the U.S. by 2030 to be zero-emitting. This is a defining moment for America – officially starting our race to eliminate tailpipe pollution from cars, passenger trucks and SUVs and to make sure those zero-emission vehicles are manufactured here in the U.S.
Please take a moment to thank President Biden for his leadership on this important issue in our fight to reduce climate pollution and other dangerous air emissions at https://act.edf.org/6x6ztco.
President Biden also announced plans to fix fuel economy standards that were rolled back by President Trump, and he instructed EPA to adopt rigorous pollution limits for new freight trucks and buses. These targets send an unmistakable signal that the U.S. is committed to developing zero-emitting vehicles – a signal that will provide the longer-term certainty that manufacturers need to unlock the next $100 billion in investments and create jobs.
Unfortunately, America is playing catch up in the race to transition to electric vehicles. As a White House statement pointed out, “Despite pioneering the technology, the U.S. is behind in the race to manufacture these vehicles and the batteries that go in them. Today, the U.S. market share of electric vehicle sales is only one-third that of the Chinese electric vehicle market.”
But today’s announcement is a major commitment to get back in the race, unleash innovation and slash pollution that threatens our planet and our health.
You can help celebrate today’s announcement by thanking President Biden for his leadership.
EDF is working with the administration, the auto industry and with lawmakers in Congress to promote historic investments in zero-emitting vehicles and the charging stations and other infrastructure that will drive us forward to a cleaner and safer future.
Thank you for your support and for being part of this growing movement for climate progress.
