From the Alaska Wilderness League (http://www.alaskawild.org):
Some good news! This week, a historic number of senators led by Senators Ed Markey (D-MA) and Michael Bennet (D-CO) and a bipartisan group of representatives led by Representatives Jared Huffman (D-CA), Brian Fitzpatrick (R-PA), Ruben Gallego (D-CA) and Frank LoBiondo (R-NJ) introduced bills in the Senate and House to designate the Coastal Plain of Alaska’s Arctic National Wildlife Refuge as Wilderness.
We’re thrilled to report that your senator, Robert P. Casey, Jr., co-sponsored this bill. It’s been hard to congratulate Congress for anything these days…would you share some goodwill and thank him at http://act.alaskawild.org/sign/Senate_refuge2017bill?
The 40 senators who signed onto the bill so far will be key in fighting off emboldened efforts to drill in the Refuge this Congress.
Two years ago, the first ever administrative Wilderness recommendation for the Arctic Refuge was transmitted to Congress. This recommendation, just like these co-sponsorships, was the result of your effort. The multiyear process included more than 600,000 public comments. 96% were in support of Arctic Refuge protections with comments from all 50 states, conservation and religious leaders, Alaska Natives, communities of color, outdoor enthusiasts and veterans from across the U.S.
Nevertheless, Big Oil and its allies in Congress have already introduced a number of bills to open the area to industrial development. These bills disregard the ecological, cultural and spiritual values of the Coastal Plain. And also disregard the American people, who by a large margin want to see the Arctic Refuge protected.
