From PennEnvironment (http://www.pennenvironment.org):
Minnesota’s Boundary Waters is a pristine forest paradise — but toxic mining pollution could destroy it forever.
Copper sulfide ore mining is a particularly destructive process. These types of mines produce all kinds of destructive waste — including “tailings” that will keep on polluting the environment for hundreds of years. To save the Boundary Waters’ interconnected streams, sparkling lakes and thriving wildlife, we must keep toxic mining away.1
This legislation will permanently ban destructive copper sulfide ore mining in the Boundary Waters ecosystem.2

Even though research by the U.S. Forest Service discovered that mining near the Boundary Waters would threaten the ecosystem with “irreparable damage,” the Trump administration worked to fast-track the mine and renew expired mineral leases. The administration also completely halted a vital study being conducted as a part of a prospective 20-year mining ban.3
Between the canceled study and renewed leases, things have been looking bleak for the Boundary Waters — but this bill could change everything.
The Boundary Waters is worth saving. Its unique beauty makes it the most visited wilderness area in the entire country. In order for future generations of Americans to have the ability to enjoy this special place, there’s no time to waste.
This legislation is the best chance we have to make sure this beloved wilderness survives for generations to come.
