From Moms Rising (https://www.momsrising.org/):
Together we’re making exciting progress towards achieving comprehensive paid leave for all.
RIGHT NOW we need to quickly identify stories from people who’ve needed paid leave for medical reasons, for example for surgery or for a chronic illness. This includes stories from all of us who’ve needed to support a family member during a similar period too.
Can you help? All of us have a story, and we urgently need yours. Please go to https://action.momsrising.org/survey/paidfamilyleave_stories to share.
Why now? Paid family/medical leave is gaining momentum on Capitol Hill! But as is the case with so many things, the details matter. There are a few other proposals circulating on Capitol Hill that would neglect the majority of working people who need to use leave to care for their own serious medical condition, or that of a loved one, because these plans only cover parental leave.
The reality is that a full 1-in-5 people are forced to leave the workforce entirely or earlier than planned because they have to take care of a critically ill family member, which in turn can have a disastrous effect on retirement savings, especially for women. [1] This of course, also hurts businesses and our economy.
Our families, our businesses, and our economy need a national comprehensive and robust paid family/medical leave program that is more than just maternity and paternity leave. We need a real paid leave plan that enables working people to take a meaningful length of leave to care for themselves if a critical health crisis arises, for a family member with a serious illness, or for the arrival of a new child. We need a real paid leave plan that is accessible to all working people, covers all families, and is affordable, job-protected, cost-effective, and sustainable for workers, employers, and taxpayers. And we need it now.
We’ll share your story directly with legislators this fall.
Whether you’ve needed time off for knee surgery, to care for a parent with dementia, to support a brother suffering from addiction, or to pamper a child battling a chronic illness, care is care and family comes first.
We’re making a big impact in the fight for comprehensive paid family and medical leave, and our stories are one of our strongest tools.
Please click here if you can help. It will just take a minute.
THANK YOU for all you do! Together we’re a strong voice for Pennsylvania women and families.
