From the Alaska Wilderness League (http://www.alaskawild.org):

Great news! House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer announced via Twitter that for the first time in history, a standalone bill to protect the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge from oil and gas drilling has come to the floor of the U.S. House of Representatives for a vote. A full House vote on H.R. 1146, the bill to restore protections for the Arctic Refuge, will occur the week of September 9.

This timing is important because it gives us an opportunity to really ramp up the pressure before they vote.

Please send a message to your member of Congress at https://secure.everyaction.com/TzXh9plKz0WshhmLAJRfUg2 and let him/her know you’ve heard about the upcoming vote and you want her/him to vote YES on H.R. 1146, The Arctic Cultural and Coastal Plain Protection Act, which will keep oil drilling out of the Arctic Refuge.

Bernadette Demientieff, Executive Director of the Gwich’in Steering Committee, issued the following statement yesterday:

“The coastal plain is sacred to the Gwich’in people and critical to our food security and way of life. It is no place for destructive seismic testing or oil rigs and pipelines. […] I am thankful to House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer for scheduling this historic vote and making this bill that will restore protections for the coastal plain a priority. Oil and gas activities here are a direct attack on our way of life and our human rights. We shouldn’t have to be fighting for our human rights this way in 2019.”

Please send a quick note to your representative today and tell him/her to stand with the Gwich’in, protect the Arctic Refuge and vote YES on H.R. 1146!
