The Arctic National Wildlife Refuge is not permanently safe from oil and gas drilling.
The Arctic National Wildlife Refuge is among one of the last remaining truly wild places.
Every year, hundreds of thousands of caribou migrate to the Arctic Refuge. Millions of migratory birds flock there to nest and polar bears den on the coastal plain.
Yet, for decades, fossil fuel companies have sought this place not for its pristine beauty, but for its oil.1 That’s why we’re rallying grassroots support to urge oil and gas companies to commit to not drilling in the Arctic. Will you join us, Sandy?

Oil extraction would be disastrous for the Arctic Refuge and the wildlife that call it home. Extraction requires infrastructure that could fracture animal habitat. And shipping vessels in the Arctic can inhibit the communication of beluga whales, who rely on a series of chirps, whistles and clicks to talk to one another.2
With drilling comes air pollution and oil spills. Drilling releases toxic chemicals into the air. Transporting oil risks spills that could coat the frozen tundra and the Arctic waters.3
With your help, we can win on this issue. Only a few fossil fuel companies have purchased tracts in the Arctic Refuge and others have paid millions of dollars to cancel their leases.4 By demonstrating how unpopular and destructive extraction in the Arctic would be, we can convince ExxonMobil to follow this lead.
