From PennEnvironment (http://www.pennenvironment.org):
America’s most successful conservation and recreation fund has gone away. Congress let the Land and Water Conservation Fund (LWCF) expire in September.
This program has funded everything from stunning national parks and monuments to local parks, hiking trails and even Little League fields.
Please tell Congress to renew the Land and Water Conservation Fund at https://pennenvironment.webaction.org/p/dia/action4/common/public/?action_KEY=29558.
The Land and Water Conservation Fund was created in 1964. President Kennedy pushed the idea. President Johnson signed it into law. And for more than five decades it has funded conservation projects. All 50 states have benefited.
Because LWCF has expired, we’re missing out on roughly $2.5 million a day in revenues the program was bringing in — money that would normally be designated for conservation projects, big and small.
But if there’s good news, it’s this: Since its inception, LWCF has enjoyed bipartisan support. In fact, U.S. senators and representatives from both parties are working to renew this program. We’ve seen the wheels turning. Our advocates have attended hearings and urged members of Congress to get the job done.
And because LWCF has funded Little League fields, during the World Series we made the rounds in the U.S. Capitol, handing out fact sheets and cookies frosted to look like baseballs.
But a semi-clever cookie alone won’t get this past the finish line. We’re going to need your help. Tell Congress to renew the Land and Water Conservation Fund.
