Tell Congress to Reinstate Pell Grant Funding for Incarcerated Persons

From Families Against Mandatory Minimums (http://famm.org/):

Great news! The push to restore Pell Grant eligibility to incarcerated students has reached Congress. Sens. Brian Schatz (D-Hawaii) and Mike Lee (R-Utah) and Reps. Danny Davis (D-Ill.), Jim Banks (R-Ind.), and French Hill (R-Ark.) introduced the REAL Act (HR 2168/S 1074), a bill that would allow incarcerated students across the country to receive Pell Grants.

For the first time, Congress can consider a bipartisan bill to restore access to post-secondary education to low-income students in every state and federal prison in the country. This would not only improve the lives of those in our prisons who want to seek self-improvement, but also improve public safety across the country, as more and more people return home with the skills they need for successful reentry.

FAMM will continue to urge Congress to make this long-needed change — but we can’t do it alone. Sign our petition calling on Congress to lift the Pell Grant ban on state and federal prisoners once and for all.
