Tell Congress Today to Protect the Johnson Amendment

Once again, Congressional Republicans are waging war on the Johnson Amendment – the federal law that bars nonprofits, including houses of worship, from intervening in elections by endorsing or opposing candidates. Just last month we urged Congress not to include language in a must-pass government funding bill that would undermine the Johnson Amendment.

That effort remains a real threat. But even as we fend it off, Republicans have opened up another front in their war by inserting language to gut the Johnson Amendment in a year-end tax bill.

This is yet another attempt to appease the Religious Right and President Donald Trump, who vowed to “get rid of and totally destroy the Johnson Amendment.”

But that’s not what Americans want. Americans want to protect the integrity of charitable nonprofits that serve the public good. They don’t want their houses of worship corrupted by partisan campaign politics. It’s time Congress started listening.
