The Equal Pay Act of 1963 made it illegal for employers to pay unequal wages to men and women in the same workplace who perform substantially equal work. But, did you know that nearly 60 years later, this chronic inequality has remained?
Gender-based wage discrimination remains a problem in the workplace because there are no assurances wage discrimination is being enforced. That must change!

On average, women earn just 81 cents for every dollar a man makes. These figures are even worse for women of color. Black women earn only 63 cents and Latinas only 55 cents for each dollar earned by a white male.
Encouraging women to negotiate a higher salary doesn’t do much good if there are institutional and structural barriers that prevent women from earning what they are worth. To close the pay gap, we need good public policies including effective laws.
The good news: We have legislation that has been introduced in both the House and the Senate, “The Paycheck Fairness Act,” that will make long overdue progress. This critical legislation, which was introduced by Rep. Rosa DeLauro and Sen. Patty Murray, will help secure equal pay for equal work for all Americans by updating the Equal Pay Act.
This wage gap must end now.
