Tell the Administration to Put Monarchs in the Endangered Species Act

In the last 20 years, the western monarch population has plummeted to only 2,000 butterflies, and the eastern population has fallen by roughly 80 percent.¹

They need Endangered Species Act protections to survive — and while the Biden administration has begun to restore protections in the Endangered Species Act, which was weakened by the previous administration, monarchs are still waiting in the wings for a spot on the list.²

For years, children in classrooms across America watched in wonder as striped caterpillars miraculously metamorphosed into vibrant orange monarch butterflies. Opening their hands, they set them free to fly.

But the world monarchs fly into is uncertain, and now future generations may never get the chance to know these little butterflies.

We know how to prevent this. The Endangered Species Act has a 99 percent success rate and has saved countless other species from extinction.³ With a new administration in office, now is our chance to give monarchs the protection they desperately need.

We’re urging the Biden administration to give monarchs endangered species protections. Will you join us?

With numerous threats endangering them, monarchs qualify for Endangered Species Act protections, but they haven’t been labeled a priority.⁴ We need to take action now to protect this beautiful species before it’s too late.

With the Endangered Species Act, we could restore and protect monarch habitats.

Extinction rates are accelerating around the globe, and monarchs aren’t immune.⁵ Sandy, we must do all we can to ensure that we don’t permanently lose monarch butterflies.
