From the Union of Concerned Scientists (http://www.ucsusa.org):
Congress must seek accountability for toxic water.
There’s a toxic threat in our water. A senior Centers for Disease Control and Prevention official says it’s “one of the most seminal public health challenges for the next decades.”
Chemicals known as PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances)—found in everything from nonstick pans to food packaging to firefighting foam—are highly toxic and are present in some places at much higher levels than what the latest science deems safe. PFAS are linked to health problems such as asthma, liver damage, and some types of cancer.
While the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) was supposed to release its draft action plan on PFAS, the government shutdown delayed them from releasing it—and its future remains unclear. However, Congress has the authority to investigate the extent of PFAS contamination, the lack of federal protections, and to renew calls for evidence-based safeguards that protect our families and communities from toxic water. Urge them to do so at https://secure.ucsusa.org/onlineactions/26OFMrISxUGG2bKSC8gkMg2.
We’ve already seen the administration attempt to hide the truth on PFAS. Now, use your constituent voice to ask the 116th Congress to protect our communities by acting on PFAS and holding the administration accountable.
