From Amnesty International USA (http://www.amnestyusa.org):
Native American women and Alaska Native women are going missing at alarming rates. This truth is incredibly chilling to me as a woman, and I need your help to find out why. This human rights crisis is largely going unnoticed and undocumented — and the Violence Against Women Act can help change that.
Women’s rights are human rights. The Violence Against Women Act (HR 1585) is federal legislation that ensures women have equal rights to care and justice after an assault. And if you take action now at https://act.amnestyusa.org/page/43613/action/1, the new version of the law will begin to document and track missing and murdered Indigenous women.
Here’s what you need to know:
- 1 in every 3 Native women are raped.
- Murder is the third-leading cause of death among Native American and Alaska Native women.
- States and the federal government don’t even count the number of Native women who go missing each year, particularly Native women who go missing from urban areas.
Native women are facing a crisis of violence. It’s time we put an end to it.
