But that’s not all! Americans pay more than 2.5 times the cost for prescription drugs compared to other countries, resulting in millions of Americans skipping prescriptions each year on necessary medications.2,3 Thankfully, there’s something we can do.
The Elijah E. Cummings Lower Drug Costs Now Act (HR 3) would allow the federal government to directly negotiate lower drug prices. It passed the U.S. House in 2019, but was denied a vote by Mitch McConnell in the Senate.
If it gets included in a human infrastructure package, it’ll only need 50 votes to pass in the U.S. Senate using reconciliation procedures. President Biden has vowed to lower prescription drug prices. It’s an issue that many members of Congress ran on last year. But even as the American people demand action, Congress has been unable or unwilling to deliver.
