Tell Congress: Support Increased Refugee Resettlement Goal

posted in: Immigration, Uncategorized | 0

From Church World Service (http://www.churchworldservice.org):

The Trump administration set the refugee admissions goal for next fiscal year at 45,000 – the lowest goal in U.S. history and a reprehensible violation of our nation’s values of compassion, hospitality, and welcome. We can and should live up to our legacy to protect the most vulnerable and extend mercy and love to all people, regardless of where they come from or what faith they practice.

CALL YOUR SENATORS & REPRESENTATIVES TODAY: 1-866-961-4293
Please call 3 times to connect with your Representative and both of your Senators; (NOTE: You can make direct calls as well—find contact information for Senator Casey (http://casey.senate.gov), Senator Toomey (http://toomey.senate.gov), and your Representative (http://www.house.gov))

Sample Script: “I’m your constituent from [CITY/TOWN]. I strongly support refugee resettlement and am outraged that President Trump has set the refugee admissions goal for next year at 45,000. I urge you to do everything in your power to see that the administration resettle at least 75,000 refugees in 2018. As we face a global refugee crisis with more than 22 million refugees, resettlement strengthens our national security, encourages other countries to keep their doors open to refugees, and advances our foreign policy interests. I call on you to protect the U.S. refugee resettlement program. My community welcomes refugees, and I urge you to reflect the best of our American values of compassion and hospitality.”

You can also tweet at your Senators & Representatives: “.@[SENATOR/REPRESENTATIVE] Tell the White House 45k is INEXCUSABLE & to #Welcome75k #refugees in the U.S. & reject the refugee/Muslim ban. #RefugeesWelcome #GreaterAs1”

Refugees are more than a figure. They are the families, the children, the communities forced from their homes and seeking the chance to rebuild their lives in safety. The U.S. refugee resettlement program is a life-saving public-private partnership that is a critical humanitarian and diplomacy tool. The average admissions goal from when The Refugee Act of 1980 passed up till today is 95,000, with an average of 80,000 refugees resettled each year. As people of faith and as Americans, we must continue to demonstrate global leadership by offering protection and welcome to refugees, regardless of their country of origin or religion.

All Members of Congress need to hear that their constituents are outraged that the administration will only let in 45,000 refugees. Tell them your community welcomes refugees and urge them to do everything they can to ensure we resettle at least 75,000 refugees next year.

Thank you for taking action, and for all your work and support.
