From Common Cause (http://www.commoncause.org):
On March 3, the House of Representatives passed the strongest, most comprehensive democracy bill we’ve seen in decades. [1]
The For The People Act (H.R. 1/S. 1) would make a MAJOR difference: for our right to vote, for everyday people’s power against big money, for fair redistricting and an end to gerrymandering, for ethics in government, and for a government that truly works for every single American. [2]
And thanks to your advocacy and support, it just passed through the House. Now, it’s onto the Senate — where it won the unanimous support of every member of the Senate Democratic Caucus in 2019.
So if we can get a fair up-or-down Senate vote — with Vice President Harris as a tiebreaker if necessary — we can send the For The People Act to President Biden’s desk and strengthen our democracy for the better.
Your voice will be even more critical at this next stage of the process — could you please write to your senators right now at https://actionnetwork.org/letters/tell-your-senators-pass-the-for-the-people-act/ and urge them to pass the For The People Act?
Here’s why we’re so excited about what enacting this law would mean for our democracy:
- The For The People Act protects our freedom to vote with universal Automatic Voter Registration, Online Voter Registration, and Same Day Registration — while modernizing our voting systems to make them even more secure and accessible.
- The For The People Act blocks partisan and racial gerrymandering by setting up independent redistricting commissions to draw legislative maps — so politicians can’t abuse their redistricting power for their own advantage.
- The For The People Act makes democracy more transparent by making secret money organizations disclose their donors, making sure voters know who is paying for the political ads they see, and making sure anyone who violates disclosure rules is held accountable.
- The For The People Act breaks the grip of big money in politics with a small-donor driven matching funds system — to let candidates run for office without relying on special interests, and so public officials can better reflect the constituencies they serve.
- The For The People Act holds public officials accountable by slowing the revolving door between government and lobbyists, making presidential candidates disclose their tax returns, expanding conflict-of-interest laws to stop corruption, and requiring the Supreme Court to adopt a code of ethics.
