From ReImagine Appalachia (https://reimagineappalachia.org/):
Would you like some good news? Of course you would!
The STREAM Act just passed the Senate with UNANIMOUS consent.
Y’all! This little bill is an incredible example of what can happen when communities identify a problem – acid mine drainage – and work together to find a bipartisan solution.
Tell the House to pass the STREAM Act as well at https://secure.everyaction.com/fdS2cIoehUGj9ki33uyxrw2.
Let’s celebrate by telling the story of this little bill that could.
First, even if you’ve never heard the term acid mine drainage – you’ve probably seen it. Acid mine drainage causes streams to run orange, yellow and red due to polluted runoff from abandoned coal mines. It’s a huge issue in Appalachia – and one we’ve never had the funding to properly address. The STREAM Act would allow for the creation of long term funding accounts to allow communities to finally clean up these dangerous eyesores.
In July, the STREAM Act passed the House by nearly unanimous vote of 391 to 9, and from there, it went to the Senate. During the STREAM Act’s little journey through the Senate, it was amended to also address mine fires and subsidence issues. So now the bill heads back to the House, where we hope it will pass again.
However, we’re running out of time! We must pass this bill before the end of the year, or our hard fought journey starts over from scratch.
We’re hopeful we can be in touch soon to let you know this bill has become a law!
