From Creation Justice Ministries (http://www.creationjustice.org/):
Right now, Alaska Native Gwich’in leaders are meeting with as many members of Congress as they can. They are in a race against time to get Arctic oil drilling provisions out of the projected revenue side of the proposed federal budget. The proposed drilling could take place in the Gwich’in peoples’ ancestral homeland: the coastal plain of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. The Gwich’in depend on a healthy Arctic Refuge for their basic food security. The Gwich’in have been subsistence hunters for more than 10,000 years. They consider the coastal plain of the Arctic Refuge to be “the sacred place where life begins,” and allowing oil extraction on sacred land violates their religious beliefs.
Act now at http://action.creationjustice.org/p/dia/action4/common/public/?action_KEY=23501.
Yet, more than half of the US Congress is refusing to respect the human rights of the Gwich’in people — their food security and spiritual life. Last week, the US Senate voted on a proposed federal budget amendment to strike Arctic Refuge oil drilling from the budget. 52 US Senators voted to keep oil drilling revenue in: every Republican except for Senator Collins (ME) voted in favor of Arctic Refuge drilling. Every Democrat except for Senator Manchin (WV) voted to strike the Arctic Refuge drilling from the budget.
Now, the House and Senate proposed budgets will need to be reconciled. Stand with the Gwich’in people to protect the Arctic.
