From the Kairos Center (https://kairoscenter.org/):
Mothers at the Berks family detention center are on a hunger strike to demand freedom for their families.
On August 8th, 22 mothers detained at the Berks County family detention center started a hunger strike, calling for freedom for themselves and their children. The Berks detention center is still open, even though its license was revoked. They wrote in their letter to Jeh Johnson, Secretary of Homeland Security:
“On Monday, we decided to begin this hunger strike, hoping that our voices will be heard and that we will obtain the liberty from detention that we need so much. We are desperate, and we have decided that we will get out dead or alive.”
Support these mothers by signing this petition to shut down Berks, and by calling these two numbers and demanding that Berks be closed and these families be released:
Tom Decker, ICE Field Director: (215) 656-7164
Ted Dallas, PA Secretary of Human Services: (717) 787-2600
