From Americans United for Separation of Church and State (http://www.au.org):
For more than six decades, a provision of the tax code known as the Johnson Amendment has protected the integrity of tax-exempt organizations, including houses of worship, by ensuring they do not endorse or oppose candidates.
President Donald Trump has vowed to “get rid of and totally destroy the Johnson Amendment,” and some members of Congress have introduced legislation to do just that.
We need your help to safeguard this important law — sign this petition today at http://projectfairplay.org/petition.
At Americans United for Separation of Church and State, we’ve been fighting for decades to protect the Johnson Amendment because taxpayers should not be forced to subsidize the partisan election activities of churches and non-profits.
The Johnson Amendment allows houses of worship and charities to focus on fulfilling their missions, without being pressured to get involved in partisan campaigns by politicians and others seeking political power. At the same time, the provision permits church leaders and non-profits to exercise their right to free speech and voice their thoughts on political and social issues.
Changing the current law will only further polarize congregations, charities, and communities.
Tell Congress that Americans don’t want houses of worship and non-profits in the business of endorsing or opposing political parties and candidates.
