Every Pennsylvanian deserves clean air, clean water, and a healthy environment and our state constitution even guarantees those rights. Unfortunately, not all elected officials in Harrisburg understand this responsibility.
To hold our legislators accountable, we work with our partners to identify the most crucial environmental votes taken by the Pennsylvania legislature and develop a scorecard letting you know whether your legislator is an environmental champion — or whether they cast their votes with polluters and disregard our health and communities.
Here’s the scorecard.
The votes we scored included bills such as:
- HB 2461, allows more state parks and state forests to be leased for gas development,
- HB 1144, which would roll back regulations for the conventional oil and gas industry to 1984 standards,
- and HB 637, which prevents Pennsylvania from regulating carbon pollution and participating in the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative (RGGI).
Our latest scorecard shows that 95 Republican legislators scored 0%, demonstrating that even more Republican legislators are turning away from the environment when compared to last session, when only 90 Republicans lawmakers scored 0%.
The average score for Republic House legislators was a mere 4% and 12% for members of the Senate compared to 91% for Democratic members of both chambers.
The 2021-2022 legislative session was tough but we managed to stop some of the worst attacks on our environment, thanks to committed and outspoken Pennsylvanians who were willing to hold their elected officials accountable.
