Yet again, the Senate yesterday (2/15) missed a critical opportunity to pass a permanent legislative solution for dreamers. However, we must continue to urge all Members of Congress to enact a proposal that offers a pathway to citizenship for dreamers while protecting access to family reunification.
Since the Trump administration terminated the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program in September 2017, more than 19,000 DACA recipients have seen their protections expire. As Congress considers proposals to protect dreamers, the White House and some Members of Congress have offered frameworks that would prevent family reunification, deprive dreamers of an opportunity to pursue a pathway to citizenship, and increase the immigration detention, deportation, and border militarization machine. These proposals would redefine family and invalidate our country’s claim to honor family values.
Our Senators and Representatives still need to hear that their constituents want to see a pathway to citizenship for as many dreamers as possible – without compromising family unity or other immigrant populations. Join us in urging our elected leaders to do everything in their power to protect dreamers – without violating the sanctity of family unity or jeopardizing our immigrant neighbors.
