Tell Senator Casey Small Donor Public Financing Should Be in the For the People Act

From Common Cause (http://www.commoncause.org):

You already know how transformational the For the People Act would be for our democracy.

This once-in-a-generation bill for free and fair elections would finally ensure that We The People call the shots in our government — not wealthy special interests.

And, one of the most important ways it does that is with nationwide small-donor citizen-funded elections systems — so candidates for office aren’t just reliant on big money donors to fund their campaigns and set their priorities.

It’s especially important right now that Sen. Robert P. Casey Jr. know how much you support small-donor public financing — please send a message urging him to pass a big, bold, and complete For the People Act at https://actionnetwork.org/letters/write-your-senator-demand-a-big-bold-and-complete-for-the-people-act.

We need citizen-funded elections, not corporate and special interest funded elections. Simply put, small-donor systems are one of the best ways we can break Big Money’s dominance over our political system.

Here’s how it works: whenever someone makes a small-dollar contribution to a candidate they believe in — $10 here, $25 there — that contribution is matched. That lets candidates focus on appealing to individual voters — instead of dialing for big money dollars.

Versions of this reform have already been implemented in places like Connecticut, Maine, and Montgomery County, Maryland, and many other localities. And it’s paying off, with more responsive government, a more diverse candidate pool, and policies that real people — not just special interests — actually want. Plus, it doesn’t cost taxpayers a cent — because the fund is fully paid for with fines on corporate lawbreakers and wealthy tax cheats.

That’s why it’s so important that small-donor provisions remain a critical part of the For the People Act — please write Sen. Robert P. Casey Jr. and urge them to resist any attempts to take it out >>
