Washington, D.C.–In response to the Supreme Court’s 5-4 ruling in Trump v. Hawaii today upholding President Trump’s immoral and discriminatory ban on travel from several Muslim-majority countries, Church World Service President and CEO John McCullough issued the following statement:
“The Court’s decision today is a travesty. By failing to acknowledge the President’s clear discriminatory intent and racial animus, the Court is allowing the administration to continue to separate families and harm Muslim communities and refugees. Congress must stop allowing President Trump to implement his cruel anti-family, anti-refugee, anti-immigrant agenda and do everything in its power to unravel the Muslim ban.”
“Church World Service is committed to welcoming people of all faiths and religions, and today’s ruling does not reflect the values of our congregations or our nation. We will continue fighting and working with Congress to protect and welcome the most vulnerable.”
As a nation, we are built on the promise of religious liberty. The Court’s ruling turns a blind eye to the pain that the Muslim ban inflicts upon families. As this lawsuit progresses, CWS calls on Congress to do everything in its power to see the Muslim ban executive order is rescinded, exert oversight and accountability over the administration, and prevent any federal taxpayer dollars from being used to implement the executive order.
