From the Sierra Club (https://www.sierraclub.org/):
Our elected officials are willing to bend the rules for the conventional oil and gas industry and weaken environmental protections because the industry doesn’t think the current law should apply to them.
Tell your Representative to vote NO on SB 790 at https://act.sierraclub.org/actions/Pennsylvania?actionId=AR0227790.
If passed, SB 790 would:
- Weaken reporting standards for oil and brine spills;
- Allow oil and gas companies to replace drinking water they contaminated with replacement water that doesn’t meet Safe Drinking Water Act standards;
- Increase pollution to streams and creeks by allowing drilling wastewater to be spread on roads as a dust suppressant;
- And preempt local ordinances regulating land development.
Don’t give polluters a free pass!
There are over 70,000 conventional oil and gas wells in Pennsylvania, and just like unconventional wells, they pose serious threats to the public health and the environment.
Weakening environmental protections is unacceptable, especially for an industry that’s seen violations more than triple between 2015 and 2017. Our regulations must protect the public and our natural resources and shouldn’t be weakened for an industry that doesn’t want to follow the rules.
This bill, a priority for industry lobbyists, has already passed the State Senate but we can stop it from going any further. Act now.
P.S. Leave a personal comment and let your legislator know why Pennsylvania needs strong oil and gas regulations.
