From the Pennsylvania Immigration and Citizenship Coalition (http://www.paimmigrant.org):
As their motto states, immi.org is “free and simple information for immigrants”. IMMI is a free online immigration database that Community Action Agencies can use to help their clients understand the process of applying for citizenship. The website (which can be viewed both in Spanish or English), has an online screening tool, legal information, and referrals to nonprofit legal services. With these resources, Immi users can learn their eligibility for citizenship, who to contact, and what to do if they’re not eligible.
IMMI presents their online screening tool as a personalized quiz; the results explain immigration options (if eligible) which can then be received via text or email. The quiz screens for an individual’s legal immigration options, possible complications that can disqualify someone from receiving citizenship, and different ways individuals can stay in the country legally. At the beginning of each section, there is a link to IMMI’s online learning center. The learning center helps explain immigration law, providing a detailed overview of an individual’s legal options. The learning center also contains a glossary of immigration terms that ensures users can fully understand their situation.
Once an individual finishes their quiz, IMMI helps people (and/or case workers) find and connect with someone who can help with next steps. IMMI has teamed up with over 1,000 nonprofits that are willing to help immigrants obtain legal assistance. Users simply type their zip code into IMMI’s location generator, and they will be matched up with the closest non-profits that can provide free or low-cost legal help. Not everyone is eligible to apply for citizenship. IMMI can help non-eligible immigrants develop a plan if deportation is imminent. The planning feature helps families prepare for deportation, manage property, and make arrangements for their debts.
IMMI is a simple but expansive database that provides essential information and resources for current U.S. immigrants. Arguably, the best feature of IMMI is the fact that all of their services are completely free. For Community Action agencies, IMMI is a dependable tool that can help ensure clients can obtain citizenship and the rights that they are entitled to. For more information, visit: www.immi.org.
