From Faith in Public Life (http://www.faithinpubliclife.org):
This week we mark the 57th anniversary of the Voting Rights Act. Our ancestors fought for this: for justice and the right for Black people to fully participate in the political process. But in 2013, the Supreme Court gutted the protections of the Voting Rights Act, essentially making the law unenforceable. We can’t take this lightly. Our right to vote is sacred and we are committed to making sure everyone can participate in selecting our leaders.
Faith leaders were instrumental in getting the Voting Rights Act signed. They were leaders in the movement: training, preaching and marching for equal rights. It’s our turn to pick up the mantle and continue the struggle. Demand that President Biden take major action to protect our rights to vote and our democracy at https://fpl.actionkit.com/sign/vra-biden-democracy!
Our ability to vote is in peril. As our predecessors fought for their voices to be heard, we must fight to protect the rights that are being stripped from us. Those committed to maintaining power know they can only win when they can silence us and strip us of our vote. That is why politicians are using anti-voter laws and racist conspiracy theories to increase their power at the expense of historically marginalized communities.
We can build the country we need and deserve, but it requires us to fight against those who want to strip us of rights, bodily autonomy and the ability to live the lives we choose.
On this anniversary of the Voting Rights Act, I hope the story of this bill can be an inspiration to you. We’ve faced huge barriers to freedom and democracy as a country before and with the power of our faith, we boldly confronted them. We can do it again.
