While our neighbors in the U.S. and around the world are urgently calling for action on climate change, the Trump administration continues to roll back the limited federal climate solutions we currently have in place. As people of faith and conscience, we need to raise our voices in unison and state clearly that this is morally unacceptable.

The Trump administration and EPA Administrator Wheeler have just finalized a rollback to the Clean Power Plan, our only national limits on climate pollution from dirty power plants. This is not only bad for our climate, but also ignores the transition to cleaner energy already underway in the electric power sector-a transition bringing good jobs and cleaner air to millions.
The Trump administration’s decision to abolish the Clean Power Plan and replace it could actually increase pollution from inefficient, polluting coal-fired power plants. EPA’s own analysis of this proposal found that it would result in massive increases in climate pollution and harmful soot and smog when compared to the Clean Power Plan.
The analysis also found it could cause up to 1,400 additional premature deaths from air pollution, and tens of thousands of additional childhood asthma attacks each year by 2030. This is a grave injustice, going against our calling to care for those who are most vulnerable, including our children.
We will be sending the petition to the Trump administration, and we’ll also be sharing this petition as we meet with our policymakers. We are making it clear that people of faith are paying attention, fighting to secure the existing safeguards, and building support for stronger and more comprehensive climate solutions.
