From Amnesty International USA (http://www.amnestyusa.org):
Message from Albert Woodfox:
On my 69th birthday, I walked out of prison. Finally, a free man. I walked out of prison because people like you didn’t turn away from my plight.
I spent 44 years in solitary confinement in a prison in Louisiana. Nearly every day, for more than half my life, I woke up in a cell the size of a parking space.
In 2015, I was featured in Write for Rights, Amnesty’s annual campaign that focuses the actions of a global movement of activists — like you — on a few priority cases.
I am now free and am so thankful for Amnesty’s remarkable support. I must help others. That’s why I’m writing you today.
Ten cases of human rights defenders — all of them women — are counting on you.
Some are in jail. Others are under dire threat. All of them targeted for their human rights work. All need your voice. Take action for all 2018 Write for Rights cases at https://act.amnestyusa.org/page/29666/petition/1.
When you take action, you’ll stand up for ALL 10 cases — women like Awad.
Awad is one of Amnesty’s 2018 Write for Rights urgent cases. She’s a Sudanese human rights defender who is counting on people like you to help her get to a place of safety. Awad cannot even show her face because it’s not safe. When you take action, you will take action for all 10 cases of women activists — like Awad — who are featured this year.
The past few weeks have been filled with heartbreaking new stories. It’s clear that human rights are under attack, now more than ever before, in the U.S. and around the world. You can take action right now and help fight back against assaults on human rights.
When the headlines are heartbreaking, you give me hope. With your support and activism, I know that we are continuing to make an impact.
I hope we can count on you. Defend Awad — and help 10 other human rights defenders.
