Overview: The UUPLAN Education Fund (UPEF) seeks to retain a part-time, consulting Organizer to work with Unitarian Universalist congregations to increase voter participation in Pennsylvania, particularly in communities negatively affected by voter suppression, for the November 3, 2020 general election (“the Project”). The Organizer will be joining a team of lay and clergy leaders in congregations across Pennsylvania and nearby states who have spent the past 6 months building a network of engaged volunteers ready to ramp up their civic engagement activities.
Responsibilities:
- Working with a dynamic, non-partisan, state-wide “PA UU the Vote Steering Committee” of lay and ordained congregational leaders, as well as Rev. Joan Sabatino, UUPLAN Education Fund’s UU the Vote Coordinator, the Pennsylvania UU the Vote Organizer will:
- Create and implement plans to identify and equip individuals and teams in local Unitarian Universalist congregations to successfully participate in civic engagement activities.
- Work with congregations and partner organizations (Pennsylvania Voices, POWER Interfaith, etc.) to create action opportunities for volunteers.
- Support lay leaders and clergy to ensure they have the resources, materials, and tools to be successful. This may include helping manage data, voter technologies, and volunteer information, coordinating travel, helping organize training and plan events, and developing and coaching leaders.
- Serve as the point of contact for volunteers and visitors from out of state including planning mobilization weekends.
- Work closely with the PA UU the Vote Steering Committee, peer organizers in other states and the National UU the Vote Team, and the UUPLAN Education Fund Board of Trustees.
- Provide concise written reports of activities as requested and an “end-of-Project” report after November 3, 2020. Post events on the www.UUtheVote.org Event Map.
Preferred Skills & Qualifications:
- Excellent organizational, time management, oral and written communications skills, and skilled in working as part of a remote team (self-starter, disciplined, collaborative).
- Demonstrated ability to build relationships with organizational partners and bring people together around a common goal, program or agenda.
- Prior electoral, labor or issue organizing experience.
- Experience building and supporting volunteer leadership.
- Experience managing volunteer recruitment and voter contact activities preferred.
- Experience with organizing in multicultural communities is strongly preferred.
- Experience working with congregations/faith-based organizations preferred, experience with Unitarian Universalism a plus.
- Experience with common campaign data tools (including NGP-VAN, Excel, Social Media, etc.) preferred
Project Duration: The Project shall start upon execution of a concise Memorandum of Understanding between the Organizer and the President of the UUPLAN Education Fund Board of Trustees. The Project shall end shortly after the November 3, 2020 election.
Time Commitment and Compensation: The half-time Organizer will be a Consultant to the UPEF, and not an employee. The total funds allocated for this position, including expenses, is $12,500 from time of hire through mid-November, 2020. Fair compensation will be discussed during the selection process. Weekly schedule and hours based on activity and proximity to the election. Some night and weekend work required, and limited travel. Reasonable, pre-approved, out-of-pocket expenses will be reimbursed. Candidates are expected to have their own cell phones, internet access and computer and pay all associated costs.
