This year, millions of Americans have experienced weather whiplash — the chaotic temperature and climatic changes that brought snow and below-freezing temperatures to the American South in February and a heatwave that just scorched the Pacific Northwest.
But while these weather changes can be chaotic, for America’s low-income families, they can also be deadly — especially in poorly maintained homes with little or no weatherization. In fact, more than 300 people have died due to severe weather in the Pacific Northwest heatwave and southern coldsnap alone.

Weatherizing and solarizing homes, schools, and businesses is part of Green For All’s five-part Common Ground Platform — an action plan for reducing carbon emissions and putting millions of Americans back to work with good-paying jobs, all while making our communities safer and more healthy.
The urgency of the climate crisis has brought liberal and conservative advocates together to identify five actions that Congress can enact right now to get Americans back to work and on a path toward a better future for all:
- Save Money on Energy: Weatherize and solarize our homes, schools, and businesses.
- Clean The Air: Deploy zero-emission school and transit buses, electrify ports, and add EV charging stations at public and non-profit gathering places.
- Cool Off: Plant trees and conserve forests.
- Expand Public Transit: Invest in more convenient and frequent service to increase low-emission transportation choices and better access to jobs and services.
- Support sustainable and regenerative agriculture: Reward farmers for long-term emissions reductions and sustainable farming practices.
These common-sense solutions are supported by liberals and conservatives alike to help build healthier communities, green jobs, safer homes, and a clean energy future for all.
